Well, in the case of the Cape Town Large Leather Storage Ottoman, we think it's both (and besides, we just made up that old saying, anyway). It's big enough on top to accommodate at least a couple of pairs of feet, and as for what's inside, well, that's up to you. The generously proportioned storage space has room for whatever you're storing. Bundles of blankets, stacks of DVDs, magazines, games, or whatever, just toss it in and put a lid on it. The heavy duty hydrolic hinges, make opening and closing the lid on this piece a breeze, you will truly be amazed. Keep all the little things you need close at hand (or foot).

We got this as it seemed like a very SOFT safe ottoman for our small children to be around. WHen the top is opened, it is supposed to stay open and it will not slam down due to the TWO pistons that help it go down slowly. This was a selling point for us.
Well, one of our pistons broke. I just noticed it broke. Nothing really happened, it just kinda disconnected and broke. I noticed one was fine and the other was jammed.
I took it off so that the ottoman would still work (with the one remaining piston) and called Hayneedle. I was outside my 30 day return so they advised me to call the manufacturer. The manufacturer is called Best Selling Home Decor Furniture. I found their website and called their number. No answer. I emailed them and it was returned to me. Guess I am out of luck. This doesn't bode well for future purchases.
So, I would probably advise people against buying this ottoman since, it something goes wrong after your initial 30 days, you are left high and dry. No contact info that works for the manufacturer is to be found. And Hayneedle says they can't provide it to me, I have to look it up online. Disappointed.
Hope the one piston stays working for awhile because it is a nice ottoman.. just prone to piston failure I guess.

I was pleasantly surprised that the product was flawless and just as described. No assembly required. The only caveat was, its actually a little lighter in color than i anticipated. The photos look espresso, this is definitely more dark brown. Its not a huge issue, but I was replacing an ottoman that was half the size, but looked almost identical otherwise, and this was several shades lighter. Was delivered to my front porch in 2 days. The hinges are great, barely need to lift a finger to open and the storage is more than ample. Bonus, I worried, that this would be difficult to use for snacking & gaming, as my previous ottoman had flip tops with trays, but its so sturdy, that I'd be comfortable putting plates of food, games and even a beverages on it, except maybe not a wine glass. Very sturdy, the kids can climb all over it, with no worry of damaging the integrity. Both comfortable and functional!

My wife and I were looking for a place to keep our 14 month old daughter's toys out of site when the adults gather at our house. This ottoman was the answer. Big, deep, durable, leather, lovely. And the price was awesome. Winner, winner!
